On July 30, 1973, a group of friends met at the home of Mrs. L. R. Allen, to discuss the possible forming of a
genealogical society, dedicated to the teaching of methods and ways of search for family history and ancestry. The
name HARRIS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY was adopted as the name of
the new society.
At the second meeting on August 9, 1973, Mr. W. F. Babcock was the inspirational speaker.
In a subsequent meeting Mrs. Allen was named the first President of the Harris County Genealogical Society.
A total of sixty-one past and present members were on the original charter list.
"The Living
Tree News" , which was first published as a newsletter, was adopted as
the official publication. The first
one was dated September, 1973, and
was headlined by a short letter from Mrs. Allen. I quote as follows,
"Dear Club Members,
My love for
people and genealogy motivated me toward starting a new club in our area.
It is my hope that the club
will grow and as it grows there is so much
we can accomplish in the field of genealogy. Please feel free to make suggestions
and offer your support to the new officers. It is your club.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lowry R. Allen"
This is as
true today, as it was about 24 years ago. With the new methods of searching
for genealogical information
via the internet and by computer we do not
have to spend many hours traveling from one source to another and can gather
many leads from the work of others. Therefore, this homage is dedicated
to our Past-President Mrs. Lowery R. Allen,
for her foresight and dedication
to genealogy and family history research.
